Information for Parents

Many resources are offered to parents through Greenville County Schools, local agencies and the internet. 

GCS

Take a look at the Family Learning Events for Spring 2008 that are taking place in our Child Development Centers and the YWCA on August Street.  You can also view the Dress Code and Lunch Menu for Greenville County Schools.  Click here to see additional resources provided by the school district.

Local Agencies

The Center for Developmental Services (CDS) provides services and support for families with developmental issues.  CDS is a multi-disciplinary center for the developmental evaluation, treatment and education of children and adolescents, with specialized services for adults.

The Greenville County Library System offers many events for children, homework help, Family Fridays, and other Fun and Games with reading for your children.  Visit their site for more information on how to get a library card and how to make the most use of the resources they offer.

Internet

The internet provides a wealth of resources for parents of young children.  Listed here are a few sites that contain helpful information for parents.  Please be mindful that information on the internet can change at a moment's notice and we are not always aware of these changes.  Should you find information on these sites that you believe is questionable, a link that no longer exists or if you would like to recommend a site for other parents, please email the webmaster.

Child Development Topics

No matter what issue you are facing as a parent, the Early Childhood Family Web Corner will have a link that address your need:  from pregnancy and childbirth to home safety to safe internet sites for children.

Parenting Web Resources gives you a list of resources for parents including those for your preschool child all the way through high school.

Find advice on every aspect of education and learning, discover parent-approved entertainment ideas, and learn how to handle the many life issues of your pre-K child on the Family Education site.

The National Network for Childcare has a helpful list of developmental milestones for your 4 year-old in the areas of Social, Emotional, Intellectual and Physical development.

Learning at Home

ABC Teach offers printable resources for your young child to assist you in teaching them the names and sounds of letters as well as practice writing.

Ready Web is a virtual library that contains information about school readiness and many articles for parents about reading with your children.

If you enjoy cooking with your child, check out the bank of children's recipes on Recipe Goldmine.  There are healthy snacks, homemade play dough and other kid-friendly dishes.  Hubbard's Cupboard gives you at least one recipe for each letter of the alphabet to help make learning delicious!

DLTK provides educational crafts, online games to practice language and math skills, mini books to make at home and fun coloring sheets to print out from home.

Staying Informed

The US Department of Education offers news for parents about laws affecting education as well as a guide for parents of school-aged children.

If you would like help on know which toys are safe and educational for your young child, read the reviews on Discovery's Parent Channel.

Reading with your Child

Reading is Fundamental provides lists of books based on age and interests.  Also check out their tips for reading with your child and raising a reader.
