The
Paul L. Dunbar Child Development and Family Learning Center
focuses on school readiness and improving literacy by exposing 4
year old kindergarten children and adults to an environment rich
in language and print. Through a co -location of agencies,
institutions, community partners and programs, a wealth of
activities and services are provided for children and their
families.
Dunbar offers these programs:
Four-Year-Old Kindergarten (4K):
A total of 140 children are served in 7 full-day 4K classes.
Classes are held Monday through Friday, 8:00-2:30.
Teachers also conduct home visits, family activities, and parent
meetings throughout the year.
Preschool Special Education:
A special education class serves preschool-aged children with
developmental delays. The special education teacher also serves
as a resource to the 4K teachers. Itinerant services are
provided for children with special needs who are enrolled in the
regular 4K program.
Parent Educators
provide bi-monthly home visitation. This program is
available to parents of preschool special education and 4K students with
a younger sibling (birth - age 4). The program is offered
in our Child Development Centers and some elementary schools.
This program provides information on child development, the
value of a print-rich environment and tips on how to inspire
children to be great readers. The nationally recognized
Parents as Teachers curriculum is used. Families are
invited to
parent/child activities,
parent workshops and book celebrations. For more
information call 355-2270.
Non school district programs:
University of
South Carolina Upstate:

experiences for university students and enriching instructional
experiences for the CDC children. Students in their junior
block of early childhood courses meet in a classroom at Dunbar
for course lectures and clinical experiences in 4K and Preschool
Special Education classrooms. These experiences assist in
preparing USC Upstate students to be effective early childhood
teachers. For more information, contact Dr. Laura Hooks at
