Black History Month
In 1960, when she was six years old, Ruby Bridges' parents volunteered her to participate in the integration of the New Orleans School system. She is known as the first African-American child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South. Robert Coles wrote a children's book titled, The Story of Ruby Bridges, to explain Bridges' story. On January 8, 2001, Bridges was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Bill Clinton.
James Earl Jones is particularly known for his resonant basso voice and commanding presence. He's probably best known as the voice of Darth Vader in George Lucas' Star Wars film series. He was also the voice of Mufasa in The Lion King.
Benjamin Banneker was an astronomer, inventor, and mathematician. He was appointed by President George Washington to the District of Columbia Commission, which was responsible for the survey work that established the city's original boundaries. When the chairman of the committee, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, suddenly resigned an left, taking the plans with him, Banneker reproduced the plans from memory, saving valuable time.
Hank Aaron was among the first blacks to play a full career in the major leagues (1954-76). He played for the Atlanta Braves. In 1974, Aaron broke Babe Ruth's legendary lifetime mark of 714 home runs, eventually setting a record of 755 homers. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.
Michael Jordan is considered by many people to be the best basketball player of all time. Michael was born in Brooklyn, New York and played baseball when he was young. He did not join his school's basketball team until he was a sophomore in high school. He had to attend basketball camps with his brother so he could get better. Michael played for the Chicago Bulls and the Olympic games.
General Colin Powell is a four star general. He was the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is the highest military post in the United States. He wrote a best selling autobiography.
W. E. B. DuBois fought for civil rights during the time of Jim Crow. He believed African Americans should have all the same rights given to other American Citizens. He was one of the founders of the NAACP. This is an organization that helps fight court battles against discrimination.
Booker T. Washington established one of the most influential schools for African Americans in 1881. This school was known for its agricultural research. Washington was invited to have tea with the Queen of England and to eat at the White House with President Theodore Roosevelt. The President asked for Washington's advice on racial and political issues. |
