A full-time RN in our healthroom supervises students’ medical and emergency needs. Vision screening is done in seventh grade, and a dental program provided through the state is made available to all students.

Students should notify their teachers if they are ill or injured. The teacher will then issue a pass to go to the health room. Parents are requested to notify the school nurse, in writing, of any health conditions pertinent to the child's well-being. The nurse may be reached at 355-2107.

Medications

Due to changes in South Carolina Policies governing the administration of prescription medication, we will no longer have a 10-day grace period before written physician authorization is required for all prescription medication.

• Parents are requested to bring prescription medication to school and provide Form MED-1 before any prescription medication may be left at the school.
• If your child must self-administer medication at school, Form MED-2 is required before medication is brought to school.

A parent may provide written authorization for over-the-counter medication to be kept and administered in the Health Room by sending in Form MED-3 with the over-the-counter medication. 

• The medication should be labeled with the student's name and the directions for use.
• No medication will be given unless it is brought to school by the parent.
• All medication must come in the original packaging. We are unable to administer medication brought in loose in baggies.

All daily prescribed medication must have a parent form and physician's authorization. Those students who must carry inhalers or Epipens need to have a physician's authorization form verifying that fact.

If a student does not take their medication at home, we cannot administer the missed dose at school. The school is not allowed to give medication on a request made by telephone. All medication must be delivered and retrieved from the health room by an adult. Violations will be addressed by disciplinary actions.

School Insurance

Insurance will be offered to students for school-time protection and for twenty-four (24) hour protection. The insurance for each student becomes effective when a receipt is issued for the premium. Students may turn in payments either to their homeroom teachers or directly to the front office.

The attending doctor or hospital must make claims for insurance. Forms for claims can be obtained from the staff in the main office. These forms are to be taken by the parents to the doctor and/or hospital.
