Ms. Shanin's ESOL classes read the book "Becoming Naomi Leon" by Pam Munoz Ryan. The main character, Naomi Leon, carves animals out of soap whenever she gets nervous and wants to keep her minds of things. In their classes students wrote essays explaining the steps for soap carving and practiced their soap carving skills to find out if they wrote the correct instructions.
