Spring Edition

From the Principal

The strong character of Berea Middle School continues to shine in the face of tragedy.  During the past quarter, we have lost two members of the family.  Raul Torres, an eighth grade student, and Susan Kee, an assistant principal, passed away leaving holes in our school and our hearts.  Each is remembered with great stories, changed lives, and a legacy for others to look toward.  We are better because of their impact on us.

We also have experienced great opportunities through the introduction of laptop computers.  The staff continues to learn new strategies for incorporating these computers into their daily lessons.  We have purchased additional equipment, such as SMART Boards, to allow more class interaction with the technology.  Most recently, the wireless modems were sent home for a trial period.  As this year concludes and the planning for next year begins, the possibilities for this initiative are exciting.

We will enter the testing season again very soon.  PACT testing will begin May 16.  Please stress the importance of doing your best.  The results of this test determine if a student should attend summer school or after school programs during the following year.  The PACT is very similar to the HSAP, the exit exam, required for high school graduation.  If a student is struggling on the PACT, the HSAP will also be very difficult.

I appreciate your support for our students and school.  The PTA and School Improvement Council, SIC, are looking for parent and grandparents to be involved in many opportunities.  The PTA needs people to help with mailings, the school store, making phone calls, and many other areas.  The SIC is looking for new members for the upcoming school year.  The SIC meets monthly to provide input on the school’s progress, budgets, and programs.  We have a wonderful group of parents this year.  Please consider becoming a part.

Finally, please have your students at school on time.  We have a large number of students that are late for class.  This results in their loss of instructional time and disruptions in the classroom.  Also, please send a note for all early dismissals.  This will allow your child to meet you in front of the school at the designated time in your note.  I appreciate your help as we continue to provide the best education for your child.

Mike Sinclair
