As students concluded their 5th grade Social Studies unit on Industry and Immigration, they experienced first-hand some of the hardships and difficulties that European immigrants at the turn of the 20th century would have encountered upon their arrival at Ellis Island. With their belongings, passport, and ticket, each student boarded the S.S. BEREA to start their journey to America. Upon arriving at Ellis Island, each "immigrant" had to pass all inspections before being admitted. Inspection Station rotations included Health, Agility, Literacy, and Citizenship. Students then reflected back on what the experience had been like by making quilt-squares, writing diaries and letters, or by creating scrapbook pages. Please visit our hall to see these impressive artifacts.
