While learning about the violent eruptions of some types of volcanoes, students in Miss Baxter’s 8th grade science class were able to examine these eruptions first hand. Using brown paper, a 2-liter of diet cola, and a few mint Mentos candies, a model volcano erupted with a 3 to 6 foot explosion of liquid and gases. Afterwards, students were able to make their own mini “eruptions” with plastic film canisters, vinegar, and baking soda. Hopefully, this lab made the students leave with an “up-surge” of excitement for volcanoes.
