Reading Aloud with your child

(The following is adapted from material presented at Bell's Crossing by Kelly Davis and Angie Neal 1/24/05)

Parents are their children's first teacher.  One of the most powerful things parents can do to improve their child's reading and spelling abilities is to read aloud to them.  A great goal is to read aloud to your child 15 minutes each day - but parents don't have to just read books!  Magazines, recipes, newspaper articles, cereal boxes - all these are great ways to include reading in a child's daily life!  When reading books to your child, be sure to include books that are of high interest to him or her. One way to insure this is to take a trip to the local library and let your child pick out a few books that look interesting.  Librarians love to be helpful by directing you to suitable books for your child's interests.  Here are just a few benefits of reading aloud to your child:

*develops a stronger vocabulary than just watching tv or conversation

*develops knowledge about different kinds of texts

*develops self monitoring skills and predicting skills

*develops a higher level of knowledge about language

*encourages a positive attitude about reading and learning

*increases world knowledge without direct experience

Ways to read aloud with your child:

*Child reads to the Parent:  This helps your child gain confidence in his or her reading ability.   Re-reading the same material each night helps develop this confidence.

*Parents read to the Child:  This builds positive attitudes towards books and develops an understanding of written language.

*Child and Parent read together:  Take turns reading paragraphs or pages.  Always be positive, and have fun!

What to do if your child seems to be struggling with reading

When your child gets "stuck": Ask the child "What would make sense here?"
Have your child look at the pictures
Skip the word or phrase and come back to it
Encourage your child to look at the first letter and decide
                              what might make sense here
Ask the child "Do you see a part of the word that you know?"

Easiest Ways to Decode a word: reading the words by "sight"
Looking at root words and suffixes
Looking at syllables or word chunks
                               Saying each sound alone

When studying, encourage your child to make associations between himself and the lesson.  What does he have in common and/or why is this information important to him?  Help your child define the purpose of the lesson will help with motivation

"A pro-active and knowledgeable parent is a critical factor in transforming an unhappy, struggling reader into a happy, proficient one" - Sally Shaywitz, "Overcoming Dyslexia"

Encourage your child to Never Give Up!  Many successful adults have struggled with reading their whole lives, yet have become very successful people.  These include:  Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko's, Bill Hewlett of HP computers, Nolan Ryan, professional baseball player, and Charles Schwab.
