Amy Clark, fifth grade teacher at Gateway Elementary, has been recognized as the 2012 South Carolina Elementary Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies (SCCSS).

Mrs. Clark is in her 14th year of teaching at Gateway Elementary. Over the past 20 years, she has worked on many state and district level curriculum connections including the PASS review committee. She has also assisted in the review of the Common Core standards and the new social studies standards for South Carolina. She is a published teacher reviewer in Houghton Mifflin textbooks.

“Through social studies curriculum, I have been able to bring learning to life. We might cook in the classroom to experience Reconstruction Stew or what a “suckeye” pancake would have tasted like to pioneers,” she said. She often comes to class dressed in period costume such as Rose, the flapper girl or Amelia Earhart.

Mrs. Clark served Greenville County Schools as a former Outstanding Teacher of Social Studies.  She currently serves as the elementary representative for the SCCSS Board of Directors.
