DHEC Official List of Conditions Requiring Exclusion From School
Regulation #61-20 requires that children in school should be excluded from attendance if they have one or more of the conditions listed below. Schools should maintain a record of children excluded under this regulation. The school should give a copy of the list of conditions that require exclusion from schools to all parents and inform them that they must notify the school within 24 hours after their child has developed a known or suspected communicable disease. Children may return to school as soon as the symptoms are resolved unless stated otherwise in the list below.
List Of Conditions Requiring Exclusion From School:
- llness that prevents child from participating COMFORTABLY at school.
- Illness that requires CONTINUIOUS supervision of child
- Illness with lethargy, severe irritability, difficulty breathing, or other manifestations of possible severe illness.
- UNCONTROLLED DIARRHEA, or stools that contain blood or mucus.
- RASH WITH FEVER or behavioral change, until a physician has determined the illness is not a communicable disease.
- PURULENT CONJUNCTIVTIS. (Pink Eye) Child cannot return without Physician’s note.
- STREP THROAT. Child cannot return without Physician’s note.
- HEAD LICE. Child may return after 1st treatment.
- CHICKEN POX. Child may return after all lesions have dried and crusted (usually 6 days).
- SHINGLES. Child may come to school if clothing covers lesions.
- Whooping Cough, Mumps, Tuberculosis, Measles, Rubella, Hepatitis A, E Coli, Shigella, and Salmonella Typhi, must have the appropriate treatment and must have a physician’s note to return to school.
