Dear Eastside Visitor,
Welcome to Eastside High School, home of the Eagles. We are a comprehensive four year high school located in Taylors, South Carolina. Taylors is a quiet and charming bedroom community located between the cities of Greenville and Greer in the “upstate” of South Carolina. Eastside High School opened in 1970 and moved into a new facility in 2007. We are one of fourteen high schools in the Greenville County School system. Our school motto is strength through human understanding.
Our mission at EHS is to provide an educational program in a positive atmosphere that ensures both quality and equity. Academic courses and extra-curricular programs provide learning experiences that build a foundation for future success. It is our goal to be recognized as a school of excellence through our achievements in academics, athletics, and the arts.
Eastside is regularly recognized for our high achieving students. For example, we recently posted a 22.8 on the ACT test, the highest ever for the school. This average placed us second in the district, and well above the state and national averages.
An outstanding cadre of teachers makes Eastside a high functioning school. Mrs. Mary Kay Rose is our teacher of the year 2012. Mrs. Rose is a member of the Guidance Department as a guidance councilor. The Eastside faculty ranks among the best in the country and over 65% of our teachers have master’s degrees. Our faculty is also the third most diverse secondary school staff in the county system.
Our comprehensive high school serves a diverse student body of 1,350 students. Students from China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Poland, and Vietnam add positive energy and new ideas to our school.
We progressively strive to individualize our school program to meet the varied needs of all students and to provide for the total development of each young person. Our highly-qualified and dedicated teachers incorporate innovative teaching methods into our academic program. For example, the math department utilizes cognitive tutor to enhance algebra instruction, the social studies department assigns students to write argumentative research papers and the English department maintains a sustained silent reading program. We also offer fourteen Advanced Placement courses and 68% of our test takers received a “3” or above to earn college credit. Our students are qualified and prepared for academically rigorous university experiences.
Eastside has a rich history of giving back to the community. Since 1977, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated to charity during the Eastside Spirit Week. This year our students support and raise money for the Upstate Homeless Coalition, an organization whose goal is to end homelessness in our region of the state.
Eastside depends on strong support from parents and the community. The PTSA, Athletic Booster Club, and Band Booster Club all provide funds, volunteer hours, and assistance for our school and extracurricular operations. The PTSA provides teacher grants for the purchase of equipment to enhance teaching and learning; the Athletic Booster Club provides supplies for each athletic team; and the Band Boosters helped send our band to the Gator Bowl last year.
We take pride in our school and its accomplishments, and we look forward to continued excellence and growth in all areas of our school program.
